I was at the comp. this weekend and can not believe how many climbers were there. It was really awesome. I think my only concern is that maybe next year you have age catagories. for instance beginners 6-14 (or 15) and beginners 16+ (or something like that). An 8 yr old doesnt have the reach or strength that a 20 y/o has and has no chance at doing the bigger climbs. The winners of the catagories were much older and larger than the kids and that really doesnt leave an insentive for the younger kids to come back and try again next year. Just a thought to make it fair for your next generation of Rock Climbers.

I am sorry for all the repeat entries... My computer is messed up and it showed me an error each time I hit send....

I have attended all of the North Shore Style comps and once again I had a great time coming to Duluth and competing. I would like to send my appreciation to all who made this completion happen! With that being said I would like to offer some observations and constructive criticism in hopes that next year¡¦s comp is even better. First, your rules state that you reserve the right to bump competitors from a division that was clearly to easy for them to compete in. I know that this is a difficult task as the lines are blurred and subjective some times. If there is one competitor that stands out head and shoulders above the others it is fairly easy to make a case to bump them up. As I look at the scores from the comp I see that for both men¡¦s intermediate and beginner there are a group of two competitors that were well above the rest in their respective divisions. The most obvious is the beginner results. The 1st and 2nd place are well into the main group of intermediate climbers and well above the rest of the beginner climbers. To score 500 points and win beginner would mean that they had to send problems in the mid teen¡¦s on average. This should have been above the 5.8 onsite criteria. There were younger and true beginner climbers that were a bit put off by being blown away by a few climbers that entered a division that they should not have been in. Another example of this is the 1st and 2nd place in the men¡¦s intermediate division were less than 100 points out of placing in the advanced category. Hmmm¡K. With 33 routes in ascending difficulty I would have thought that beginners should have been sending <10, intermediate should have been sending 10-20, advanced should have been sending 20-30, and open should have been sending upper 20¡¦s to 33. That did not seem to be the case¡K It was also a bummer that the hardest send of the day was 29. No one sent the hard routes. Dang! As a route setter I know how hard it is to set at a specific difficulty within your own climbing ability. I also know that it is darn near impossible to set routes at specific difficulties above your own climbing ability. You won¡¦t see me setting any 5.13¡¦s! I am wondering if the people who set the hard routes are experienced at that grade? I know Chris Hirsh was planning on setting routes¡K Did I hear it right during the awards that a female advanced prize went to someone who had not competed at all? If this is true I will say that that was pretty lame¡K It should have been raffled off for the Access fund or something¡K Nuf said. Lastly, what is it with all the foot chips being used for hands? I think I made the same comment last year. Ouch! If this is the ¡§north shore style¡¨ you are going for then fine, but there are other ways to make routes hard rather than putting little tiny sharp foot chips in the sequence. I must admit that the thin really crimpy stuff is not my cup of tea so I may be a bit biased ƒº

First off I would like to thank everyone who made this comp possible, I think it went great. My only complaint is the lack of bumping, I understand there was a computer glitch but since when do you need a computer to tell you who needs to be bumped, I thought it was pretty obvious that certain people should have been bumped. In the spirit of fairness if someone flashes an 11b they shouldn't be in intermediate.

Thanks again for a great comp. I have been to all of them. I just want to say ditto to all of Ben's comments. The same issues were true in the female category. People need to be bumped if all the climbs are above the category they signed up for. And if you don't show up, you shouldn't get a prize. That is just stupid. See you next year!
